Britons are generally a penny-pinching lot, with 76% squeezing every last blob of toothpaste from the tube - but when it comes to money, we're less economical, according to research.

In a recent survey it was found that although three quarters would squeeze out all the toothpaste, only one in ten had looked at remortgaging in the last year.

About 69% of homeowners balance sauce bottles upside down to use every last drop, 83% search out three-for-two offers in shops, and 76% hunt through the phone directory rather than pay the 42p or so to directory inquiries.

A little of the time involved in these money saving activities might be better spent changing your mortgage to a better rate.
